PADI Adaptive Teaching Instructor Course

The PADI Adaptive Teaching Instructor Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air is a transformative program designed to equip diving professionals with the skills and mindset needed to provide inclusive and supportive scuba instruction to all divers, regardless of physical or mental challenges. As the only PADI Career Development Centre on Gili Air, Oceans 5 has a reputation for fostering high teaching standards and instilling a commitment to accessibility and safety in all its courses. The Adaptive Teaching Instructor Course specifically enables instructors to modify and adapt their teaching methods to cater to individuals with diverse needs, ensuring that the joy and exploration of diving are available to everyone.

Participants in this course learn how to assess the individual abilities of students and implement tailored approaches that enhance comfort and success underwater. This involves practical exercises that challenge instructors to think creatively and empathetically, shifting from a traditional one-size-fits-all teaching model to a more flexible, student-centered approach. The course goes beyond merely understanding physical limitations; it delves into communication techniques, empathy-building practices, and the psychological aspects of teaching divers with disabilities or specific learning needs.

Oceans 5 Gili Airโ€™s state-of-the-art facilities, including two spacious training pools and modern classroom settings, provide an ideal environment for instructor candidates to learn, practice, and refine these adaptive techniques. Additionally, the course is conducted by experienced PADI Course Directors and instructors who bring a wealth of knowledge, real-world insights, and passion for inclusive education. The small class sizes at Oceans 5 ensure personalized guidance, giving candidates the opportunity to ask questions, receive tailored feedback, and build confidence in their new teaching methods.

These exercises are pivotal in fostering an understanding of the needs of future students who might require different approaches to succeed in their diving goals.

Moreover, Oceans 5โ€™s emphasis on creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere is palpable throughout the course. The dive center has nurtured a culture of teamwork and encouragement, reflecting its broader commitment to the islandโ€™s community and the inclusive practices it champions. Training Sessions

The main parts of the course are the Confined Open Water sessions and the Open Water Sessions.

Confined Water Session

In the confined water training section you learn techniques used by disabled divers and to assist disabled divers in water. You will also experience some disabilities thru simulation and how to better assist your own students/divers. It is important that you understand the difficulties your students may experience during training and how you can assist them in overcoming these.

By simulating being disabled and then alternating as the Instructor for disabled students, you develop a clearer understanding of problems that are encountered (during the pool training disabled divers should be invited to assist if possible). You will need to consider the disabilities of the divers you will be training and be sensitive and aware of the special requirements that are specific for each student.

Open Water Session

In the Open Water Workshop, you will also learn about how to evaluate dive sites and their accessibility, and develop a general awareness of other logistic considerations, which are necessary when you are training or accompanying disabled divers.

Certification as a PADI Adaptive Teaching Instructor

To certify as a Professional you must demonstrate that you have the ability to successfully train and guide individuals with physical disabilities in an open water environment.

Learning to deal with all types of disabilities, a Dive Instructor can encounter, is not possible in a 2-3 days training program. You will however get a base to build upon, with relevant techniques and knowledge.

In order to develop your experience you must work with the disabled. Update your knowledge and training methods, read newsletters, and work with rehabilitation centers and research information specific to the disabilities you encounter.
